NOTE: There is only 1 application for both the CHA and CHA-TL positions. Though returner experience is not required to be hired as a CHA-TL, the Department will prioritize applicants who have previously worked as a CHA or CHA-TL when filling vacant CHA-TL positions.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Conference Housing Assistants (CHAs) and Conference Housing Assistant-Team Leaders (CHA-TLs) are responsible for providing hospitality services and assistance to guests who stay overnight in residence halls while they are at UNC Charlotte for summer camps, conferences, and New Student Orientation (NSO).
CHAs and CHA-TLs work together to in teams to complete job tasks. CHA-TLs will have additional leadership responsibilities which are listed here. The specific duties of both CHAs and CHA-TLs include room preparation/teardown, guest check-in/out, key management, inventory control, administrative tasks, operating 24hr desks, and providing in-person support to conference/orientation participants in a 24hr on-call duty rotation.
CHAs and CHA-TLs will be assigned to a team supervised by an REC (Residence Education Coordinator) who is a full-time professional staff member in HRL. Each team will have around 7-10 events that they will be responsible for managing the prep work, set up, check-in, checkout and tear down for. Although the priority for CHAs and CHA-TLs will be work aligned with summer conference and orientation housing programs, they may at times perform tasks that support any aspect of the department. The Assistant Director for Conferences oversees the efforts for the Summer Conference and Orientation Housing programs through partnerships with various campus departments.
Employment Dates: May 20 - August 3, 2024.
Job responsibilities may require a work extension from August 4-7, 2024. Work extensions will be required for any students who do not have a Fall 2024 work assignment. Compensation for those who work from August 4-7 will be paid out at the position’s daily rate.
Work Schedule:
Staff will average 30 hours per week. Work will be a combination of traditional and non-traditional hours. Early mornings, evenings, and weekends are required. Holiday shifts may also be required. Schedules vary each week, therefore, a regular recurring schedule cannot be guaranteed. Scheduling flexibility is required to be a successful member of the team. CHA COMPENSATION
- $5,000 stipend (divided into paychecks based on the University payroll schedule).
- On campus housing is provided. The credit is applied to the student account for the full cost of your summer housing in an on campus apartment.
CHA MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work from May 20 - August 3, 2024.
- Participate in all virtual/in-person training sessions May 21 - 24, 2024.
- Must have been enrolled in Spring 2024 and Fall 2024 classes at UNC Charlotte.
- Must have a valid US driver’s license.
- Must live on campus for the entire summer period.
- Students who currently live off campus are eligible and encouraged to apply. Those who maintain off campus leases through the summer are required to remain on campus and sleep overnight in their University provided room while they are on duty.
- If enrolling in summer classes, students are allowed to take up to 3 credit hours during any summer term (first half or second half). If a class spans across the full summer term, students will only be allowed to take 3 credit hours for the entire summer. Students must not be taking summer classes that conflict with work hours. Night classes and asynchronous classes are strongly preferred. Summer class schedules must be approved by the Assistant Director for Conferences.
- Must not maintain any other employment.
- This position is to be the principal non-academic activity. Additional social/community and/or extracurricular activities must be approved in advance by the Assistant Director for Conferences.
- Be in good academic standing: minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.
- Be in good judicial standing: not be on conduct probation with the University.
- Be in good standing with the Department of Housing and Residence Life.
