University and Department Facts
- UNC Charlotte is a young, vibrant research institution located about eight miles north of uptown Charlotte. Our 1,000 acre, tree-filled campus is located just two hours from the beautiful NC mountains and only three hours from some of NCs best beaches. While were a large public University, weve long prided ourselves on making the campus and the on-campus community feel like a home away from home for the 6100 students who live in our residence halls.
- The Department of Housing and Residence Life is led by the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. The Associate Vice Chancellor supervises four Directors who each provide leadership to one of these functional areas: Residence Life, Business Services, Administration and Assessment, and Operations.
- Our department has grown to include an impressive selection of traditional rooms, suites, apartments, and a Greek Village. Since just 2011, we have opened six new buildings and have significantly renovated several others. We are very proud of our residence halls and the options and opportunities they provide to students.
- During the 2017-2018 year, we introduced the first version of our residential curriculum and have since been working to assess its effects and are excited to continue to make changes to it to further increase the value of living on campus

Professional Staff Apartments
At UNC Charlotte we strive to make our apartments feel like home. All apartments are partner, children, and pet friendly. Residence Education Coordinators are able to customize their space with a different paint color or additional furniture when available to make apartments feel like their own. Our facilities team works hard to quickly fix or replace anything broken or outdated in each apartment to keep them well-maintained.
REC apartments are two or three bedroom apartments furnished with a queen sized bed, nightstand, and dresser in the master bedroom. In addition, guest rooms are furnished with a twin or full bed, dresser, and desk. Living rooms include an entertainment stand, couches, a coffee table, end tables, and most include a kitchen table. Kitchens are fully equipped with an oven, microwave, refrigerator, and several units also include a dishwasher.
All utilities are included with the apartment including high speed internet, cable, HBO GO, Max GO, and individually controlled heating and air conditioning.

New RECs will move onto campus and begin work in late June. The first two weeks of work include departmental orientation sessions designed to give new employees a foundation on which they can build as well as University New Employee Orientation. Residence Life staff training meetings and staff development sessions are scheduled throughout the month of July, including an overnight retreat. Resident Advisors and Desk staff return in early August for training. Training for RECs continues throughout the year in preparation for departmental process and protocols.
