Why did you choose to be an RA or DA and what has been the most fulfilling part of your experience?
I chose to become an RA because I wanted to create a more meaningful and positive residential experience for students, especially freshmen. During my first year, my RA wasn’t very involved and did not actively promote events or community building. That experience motivated me to take a different approach and provide residents with a welcoming, engaging environment. I wanted to accomplish this through interactive events that targeted residents’ hobbies and interests. These meaningful events would allow them to feel seen and connected with the people living within their community. The most fulfilling part of my job is when I get to see residents grow throughout the year and develop into a new version of themselves. They begin to find their independence, form lasting friendships, and gain confidence in who they are. Knowing I played even a small part in helping them feel supported, included, and empowered makes the role incredibly rewarding.
How do you manage your academics, leadership roles, and extracurriculars with your RA or DA job?
I manage my academics, leadership roles, and extracurriculars by staying organized and practicing strong time management. I rely on to-do lists, reminders, and a paper calendar to track important deadlines and responsibilities across all areas of my life. I also make a habit of planning my week in advance, so everyday I know the tasks I need to complete to keep me ahead. Being an RA has taught me how to balance multiple priorities while still showing up fully for my residents. I’ve learned how to adapt when unexpected events come up and communicate effectively with others (either co-RAs or professors) when I need support. By staying disciplined with my time and being intentional about what I commit to, I have been able to maintain a healthy balance of tasks and responsibilities.
How has the RA or DA role developed you personally and professionally?
After serving as a Residential Advisor (RA) for the past three years, this role has shaped me both personally and professionally. Personally, I’ve grown in confidence, empathy, and time management skills while having to balance my own responsibilities with supporting residents. I’ve also learned the value of active listening, adaptability, and building meaningful connections. Professionally, the role strengthened my leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills. I have gained experience in event planning, teamwork, and calmly handling unexpected challenges. Overall, this position has taught me how to balance compassion with responsibility. These skills will ultimately benefit me in any future career.
