Why did you choose to be an RA or DA and what has been the most fulfilling part of your experience?
I chose to become an RA because I care about people and want to be a supportive presence for others. Creating a welcoming and safe space where students feel seen, heard, and valued has always been important to me. The most fulfilling part of my experience has been building strong connections—not only with my residents, but also with my fellow RAs and professional staff. Whether it's helping someone through a tough moment, planning a fun program that brings people together, or just sharing a conversation in the kitchen, these moments remind me why I love this role.
How do you manage your academics, leadership roles, and extracurriculars with your RA or DA job?
Balancing my responsibilities as an RA with my academics and leadership roles requires
strong time management and organization. I use a digital calendar to plan ahead, prioritize tasks, and make sure I give each area the attention it needs. I’m also very intentional about self-care and setting realistic boundaries so I don’t burn out. Being involved in multiple areas has taught me how to communicate effectively, ask for help when needed, and stay flexible when unexpected things come up. It’s not always easy, but I’ve learned how to stay focused, keep my goals in mind, and make the most of the time and resources I have.
How has the RA or DA role developed you personally and professionally?
Being an RA on campus has helped me truly make a change and lend a hand in my community. I also really enjoy meeting new people and connecting with my residents. Because of my job as an RA, I have been able to learn new skills and nourish my strengths and improve my weaknesses. I want to continue to use my empathy for people and love for building communities in my post grad career and I wouldn't have known that this is my passion if I hadn't had this wonderful opportunity.
