Why did you choose to be an RA and what has been the most fulfilling part of your experience?
I chose to be an RA because I was interested in gaining on-campus job experience, and through my research, I found that the RA role best fit my interests. I also liked how well-rounded the role is, as it involves developing and honing multiple skills such as crisis management, interpersonal, and administrative skills. The most fulfilling part of my experience has been seeing my past residents flourish on campus. Whenever I see them on campus, it makes my day because they recognize me, and it makes me feel that I made a lasting impact on their time in the residence hall.
How do you manage your academics, leadership roles, and extracurriculars with your Resident Advisor job?
Within the RA role there is some flexibility, and often times you are given deadlines and certain dates where you need to be present. With this in mind, time management is key. I often write all of my tasks down for the week and religiously update and look at my Google Calendar. When it comes to academics, I schedule the times in which I plan to study or complete my assignments. Also, most importantly, I communicate with my supervisor and co-workers. For example, if I am having time conflicts with all of my activities, academics, and job combined, I let my supervisor know, and we find a way to balance all of it and find a resolution.
How has the Resident Advisor role developed you personally and professionally?
Before entering into the RA role, I tended to be more of an introvert. Throughout the role, I have been able to become more extroverted and confident when putting myself out there. Becoming an RA has allowed me to meet so many different people from many backgrounds and helped me realize what my strengths are. I have also honed my professional communication skills, problem-solving skills, and interpersonal skills. As a business major, the RA role has given me the core skills I need to thrive in the professional workplace and in my personal life.
