First-Year Live-On Requirement (and exemptions)
In alignment with our institution's efforts to provide all students with a solid foundation for academic success, the University has a first-year live-on requirement for first-time in college (FTIC) students.

Here’s what you need to do:

Apply for housing.

*OR* Request an exemption.

  • Some students may receive an automatic exemption (no housing application or exemption request required). Examples of automatic exemptions include students who are residing at their permanent address in a neighboring county while attending their first year at the University (Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Catawba, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Rowan, Union), under 16 (on first day of housing contract), over 21 (by first day of housing contract), international student (F-1 or J-1 status), prior Military Service, or married. If you would prefer to live on campus, you can apply for housing via the Online Housing System.
  • If you think you may have a reason to request an exemption, you will have the opportunity to do so through the Online Housing System. Examples of eligible exemptions include dependent children, primary caregiver of an adult, financial hardship, or other extenuating circumstances.

Explore On-Campus Living
Living on campus helps students build a foundation for success at UNC Charlotte. Residents will establish a support network of friends, classmates, and mentors while living in the heart of campus life. Learn more about on-campus housing at Charlotte:

Continuing, Returning and Transfer Students: The availability of space for continuing, returning and transfer students is extremely limited. We must prioritize space for entering first-time-in-college (FTIC) students. Please remember that if you do choose to apply, you will be required to pay the non-refundable $100 housing application processing fee and that does not guarantee a housing assignment.

We will not be able to provide an update on whether we will have availability on-campus for continuing, returning and transfer students until mid-to-late summer. If you are uncomfortable waiting that long - do not submit a housing application and instead secure a space off campus as soon as possible.
