Why did you choose to be an RA or DA and what has been the most fulfilling part of your experience?
I chose to become an RA because my sorority hadn't had an affiliated RA in several years and without one, was struggling to follow on campus policies. The most fulfilling part of the experience has been getting to do the part of the job I'm passionate about- supporting residents. I had three first year residents move in after the first day of class and they didn't know how to use the Greek shuttle or what the shortcuts to walk to campus were, and adjusting to school and being a member of a sorority was difficult for them. My favorite messages to respond to were the ones that asked if I could help them get to class from Greek Village or if I knew a club they could join that aligned with their interests and especially the ones that asked if I was home and wanted to hangout in the common spaces with them.
How do you manage your academics, leadership roles, and extracurriculars with your RA or DA job?
I am a meticulous planner- I keep extensive track of my digital and physical calendars and also set daily reminders for to-do lists. Additionally, I don't believe in quitting until a designated task is completed- regardless of how long it might take me. If I can, I attempt to delegate tasks so that work is able to be better distributed and accomplished in a timely manner.
How has the RA or DA role developed you personally and professionally?
As an RA, I've enjoyed getting to make deeper connections on campus that have enriched my life. I also enjoy getting to work with other student staff members and professional staff members to develop residents on campus and help them be successful.
