Why did you choose to be an RA or DA and what has been the most fulfilling part of your experience?
I chose to become an RA because of a powerful first-hand experience during my freshman year. One night, I was involved in a high-stress situation that required PPS involvement and an incident report. Despite it being around 2 a.m., my RA responded immediately with calmness, care, and clear communication. His presence made me feel safe in a moment of uncertainty, and the next morning, he followed up with each of us to offer additional support. That experience stayed with me. It made me realize how important the RA role is, and I knew then that I wanted to be that same source of support for others. I felt a strong desire to give back, especially because I’m not sure how differently things might have gone if my RA hadn’t been so confident and compassionate.
The most fulfilling part of being an RA has been stepping into that role for someone else. Whether it’s something small like a roommate mediation or something more urgent like a 2 a.m. lockout, I’ve found meaning in being there for residents when they need help the most. Knowing I’ve made a positive impact, no matter the size, gives me a deep sense of purpose. Being an RA has allowed me to return the support I once received, and that continues to drive my commitment to the role.
How do you manage your academics, leadership roles, and extracurriculars with your RA or DA job?
As a third-year student, I’ve learned to manage my responsibilities with intention and balance. I currently serve as an RA, the Director of Marketing and Alumni Relations for the Business Honors Program, and I’m also enrolled in an early entry master’s program in Data Science and Business Analytics. While this may seem like a lot, it’s actually less than I took on last year. Through experience, I’ve learned to recognize my limits and prioritize my well being without sacrificing performance. I thrive in moderately high-stress situations, because they engage and motivate me. I’m not afraid of taking on multiple roles, and I take pride in handling each of them with my full dedication.
One key strategy that helps me stay on top of my commitments is using Google Calendar to schedule everything from lunch breaks to meetings. This simple tool keeps me organized and ensures I make the most of my time. Of course, there are moments when responsibilities overlap, but I’ve learned to navigate those times by intentionally carving out space to decompress and recharge. I firmly believe that time management isn’t just about productivity, but also about sustainability. In this area, I feel the most confident in my abilities and consider it one of my strongest skills.
How has the RA or DA role developed you personally and professionally?
The RA position has helped me become more comfortable and confident in my social skills and ability to manage both a demanding job and academics!
